History of Key Royale

School Key

In the early 1950’s, Peder Mickelson, a retired developer, purchased what was known as School Key for $25,000. (The cost of clearing and development of the School Key was estimated at 6-8 times the purchase price.)

Mr. Mickelson had the vision for the development of School Key to be a future home development site to be renamed Key Royale. His vision included the creation of the canals so that every home would have a view of the water, whether it be of the canal, Bimini Bay or Tampa Bay.

The first plat of land was approved by Holmes Beach in 1957, which was the same year that the original bridge was built connecting Holmes Beach to Key Royale.
